Simple chocolate cupcakes

These simple homemade chocolate cupcakes are moist, soft, and so yummy they will just melt in your mouth.
Topped with a classic chocolate butter cream frosting these cupcakes are super delicious and rich.

Chocolate Cupcakes

  • 1 ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup white granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • cup cocoa
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla essence
  • 2 eggs
  • cup oil
  • ½ cup milk
  • ½ cup hot water

Chocolate buttercream frosting

  • 200 grams salted butter
  • cups icing sugar powder sugar
  • cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla essence
  • 3-4 tablespoons cream


  • Preheat oven to 160°C / 320°F
  • Line muffin pans with cupcake liners. This recipe will make 18 -20 cupcakes

Chocolate Cupcakes

  • Add dry ingredients to a large bowl and mix.
  • To the dry ingredients add the eggs, oil, vanilla, and milk
  • Mix well with a hand whisk or electric beater on low until combined.
  • Scrape down the sides of your bowl and then slowly beat in the hot water.
  • Full cupcake liners ¾ of the way.
  • Bake for 18-20 minutes
  • Rest for 5 minutes then tune out on to a wire rack to cool.

Chocolate buttercream frosting

  • Beat butter until light and creamy.
  • Add the vanilla, cocoa and 2 cup of icing sugar and beat on low speed for 30 seconds while adding 3 tablespoons of the cream.
  • Beat on high speed for 2 minutes
  • Add the other ½ cup of icing sugar as need to get a good piping consistency or add more cream if needed.
