Homemade flour tortillas

Soft, tender, buttery homemade flour tortillas.

Once you go homemade flour tortillas you will not want to go back to store bought.

These homemade flour tortillas are simple to make and you only need a few ingredients that are kitchen staples, you most likely already have them in your house. Flour, butter, salt and hot water.

This recipe is great weather you are wanting to make burritos, enchiladas, or quesadilla. In our house we love using flour tortillas in place of naan bread with our Indian dishes. As there is no yeast in them you do not have to wait for then to rise so they can be made in a short amount of time. (no need to think ahead)

Homemade flour tortillas

I make my tortilla dough with butter because everything is better with butter. But you can use any oil of your liking, just substitute the butter for ¼ cup of oil.

How to make flour tortillas

You will need – 2 cups flour

                              ½ teaspoon salt

                              70g melted salted butter

                               1 cup hot water

Tortilla dough

Into a bowl add the flour and salt.

Pour the melted butter over the flour and mix well until it looks a bit like breadcrumbs.

Add in the hot water and mix with a spoon until it comes together. Dump the dough on to the beach and lightly knead dough into ball, but do not over mix the dough as you want it to be soft and springy not tight and stiff.

Cover your dough and let rest for at least 10minutes.

Divide dough into 12 portions and roll into balls.

Rolling your tortillas

Flour your surface and rolling pin

Roll out each ball into a circle.  Add extra flour to prevent your tortillas from sticking.

Cooking your tortillas

Cook your tortillas in a hot, ungreased pan. Fry your tortilla on each side for about 40-60 seconds depending how hot your pan is. Flip the tortilla once it has bubbled up and has golden brown spots.

Once cooked place your tortilla in a clean tea towel to keep warm and soft until you are ready to eat.

Storing your tortillas

Tortillas store well. I keep mine in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. When I want to use them, I place them in a hot oven for 2 -3 minutes until they are warm and soft.
